East Africa is the Sub-Saharan region below the Horn of Africa right at the equator in the great lakes. It includes countries like Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan which are united under the East African community. Other countries in the region include the islands of Seychelles, Madagascar, and Comoros among others. Some parts of East Africa have been renowned for their concentrations of wild animals, such as the “big five” the Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Rhinoceros and Leopard.

East Africa’s geography is often stunning and scenic. Shaped by global plate tectonics that have created the Great East African Rift, East Africa is the site of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Mount Ruwenzori, the three tallest peaks in Africa. It also includes the world’s second largest freshwater lake, Lake Victoria, and the world’s second deepest lake, Lake Tanganyika among others.
The climate of East Africa is rather atypical of equatorial regions. Because of a combination of the region’s generally high altitude and the rain shadow of the westerly monsoon winds created by the Ruwenzori Mountains and Ethiopian Highlands, East Africa is surprisingly cool and dry for its latitude.
